Summer Holiday Reading with Spellzone!

Reading allows you to travel to different worlds, experience new cultures, and walk in the shoes of fascinating characters. It’s also a great way to help you improve your spelling and vocabulary – even during the school holidays! 

Here are some reading suggestions for the summer. Click on the title of any book to find the word list that goes with it. Don’t forget to try our Summer Spelling game!

Year 7:

  • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne: An emotional tale set during World War II that explores the unlikely friendship between two boys on opposite sides of a concentration camp fence.
     
  • Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman: A thought-provoking dystopian novel that tackles issues of race, power, and love in a divided society.

Year 8:

  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon: Follow the journey of Christopher, a fifteen-year-old with autism, as he unravels the mystery of a neighbourhood dog's death.
     
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell: A classic allegory that uses farm animals to satirise totalitarianism, exploring themes of power, corruption, and revolution.

Year 9:

  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee: This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel portrays racial injustice and moral growth through the eyes of Scout Finch, a young girl living in Alabama during the Great Depression.
     
  • Lord of the Flies by William Golding: Join a group of boys stranded on a deserted island as they struggle to establish order, leading to a chilling exploration of human nature.

Year 10:

  • 1984 by George Orwell: A dystopian masterpiece that depicts a totalitarian regime and the consequences of a surveillance state on individual freedom.
     
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen: Delve into the world of 19th-century England as Elizabeth Bennet navigates love, marriage, and social expectations in this beloved classic.

Year 11:

  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley: Explore the moral and ethical implications of creating life as Victor Frankenstein's scientific experiment spirals into tragedy and despair.
     
  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens: Follow the journey of Pip, an orphan who dreams of becoming a gentleman, in this coming-of-age tale set in Victorian England.
