Engaging students in spelling can be challenging. These fun spelling games and activities, designed for various ages and abilities, can be easily implemented in the classroom to make learning spelling enjoyable and effective.

  • Spelling Bingo

Create bingo cards with words instead of numbers. Call out a word and instruct students to mark it if it appears on their card. The first student to complete a line or fill their entire card wins by calling out: 'Bingo!'

  • Word Search Puzzles

Use Spellzone to turn spelling words into a printable word search puzzle. Students find and circle the words hidden in the grid.

Don’t want to print? Play online instead.

  • Guess the Letter

Learn spelling words using Spellzone’s hangman-inspired Witch Which. Begin a game and share it on the board. Invite students to guess the letters one at a time – incorrect letters make the witch grow stronger. The goal is to guess the word before the witch wins.

  • Spelling Relay Race

Divide the class into teams. Call out a word from the spelling list. One at a time, each student runs to the board and adds a letter to the spelling before returning to the starting point and passing the pen to the next teammate. The team that correctly spells the word first earns a point. Repeat this process for each word in the spelling list.

  • Spelling Match

Use Spellzone to turn spelling words into a printable Connect the Words worksheet. Students match the words to the correct definitions or example sentences.

  • Alphabetical Order Race

Use Spellzone to turn spelling words into printable flash cards. Students arrange the words in alphabetical order as quickly as possible.

  • Word Jumble

Jumble the letters of each spelling word. Students then unscramble the letters to form the correct word.

Alternatively, try one of Spellzone’s online pattern recognition games.

  • Spelling Bee

Use Spellzone to host a spelling bee with rounds of increasing difficulty. This will encourage students to study and spell words correctly under pressure.

  • Interactive Spelling Games

Try out Spellzone’s extensive range of pattern recognition, problem solving, and voice and vocabulary games for individual, group, or whole class learning. Spellzone’s multiplayer feature means students can compete against one another.
