Spellzone has proved a very useful resource for parents who are home schooling their children, or for those who simply want to support their children's school work. For example, if your child has school spelling lists to learn, you can upload the words to our site and use our games for learning.
This English spelling course is most suitable for learners aged 10 and older, particularly those who have found spelling difficult to grasp. However, it has also proved popular with some younger students who have no specific spelling difficulty and who enjoy a challenge. The course assumes that the user will be able to spell simple words such as run, sit, stand, jump and then covers all the harder spelling rules.
Parents need no expert knowledge in teaching spelling as the course follows a logical progression and all spelling rules are clearly explained at each stage. There are extensive word lists for each rule with practice in the form of games and interactive tests. All scores are recorded and stored online in your password-protected area. For further information on the teaching content of the course, please see Notes for Teachers and Tutors.
The advantage of an online course is that it can be used on any Internet connected computer, in your child's school or at home. It can even be used on a mobile device. As all progress and results are stored online it doesn't matter when and where children work on the course; you can always monitor their progress.
If your child's school subscribes to Spellzone, all their students can use the course both in school and at home. You would then not need to have an individual subscription. Each student's progress is stored in his or her own password-protected area so your child can follow up school work with further practice at home.
Is your son or daughter dyslexic? Many parents of dyslexics choose to educate their children at home. Spellzone is written by an experienced dyslexia teacher who is also the author of several books for dyslexics. Please see here for further information on how this spelling course can help dyslexics: Spellzone and Dyslexia
Is the content of Spellzone suitable for young children? As this spelling course is mainly used with older students (teenage to adults) who have spelling problems, we want to make sure the material appeals to older students. Therefore much of the vocabulary used does reflect the interests of older students and adults, for example:
(From Unit 28, The endings -tion, -sion, -cian)
My credit card never leaves my posses___. |
However, care has been taken not to include any inappropriate material. You can be confident that children will not meet any content of a sexual or violent nature.
There are six free spelling units which are free to all users:
