5 Spooky Spelling Lists

blog home

Have you had a chance to play our new Spooky Spelling game? If not – make sure you have a go. The game is here for the spooky season only. In Spooky Spelling, you have to catch creepy spiders in order to spell words.

Spelling games are great way to warm up at the start of a lesson, or to take a break with when you’re beginning to lose focus. They can be used with any of our thousands of spelling lists, or you can create your own spelling list of words you would like to practise. Once you have the words you want to learn, simply click on the football icon above the list and choose the game you want play,

What’s better than a spooky spelling game for Halloween? A spooky spelling list to go with it, of course! Here at Spellzone we’ve been busy collecting haunted, hairy, and downright horrible words to help you brush up on your Halloween vocabulary. Here are five lists to choose from:

1.    Halloween

Our first list contains a range of Halloween vocabulary words to teach you about a variety of traditions. Don’t forget you can click on the speaker icon to hear the word and example sentence read aloud.

2.    Trick-or-Treat

One of the most fun Halloween traditions is trick-or-treating. This is when children dress up in costumes and visit houses in the neighbourhood. Those who answer their doors are given the option of giving the children treat (like candy or an apple) or facing a trick. If you want to learn about costumes and candy, this is the list for you.

3.    Witches, Ghosts, and Monsters

Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without a few terrifying monsters and eerie spectres. This list isn’t for the faint-hearted, but those of you looking for costume inspiration might be brave enough to click through!

4.    Body Horror

Into gory films? Big fan of all things blood and guts? From skeletons to snot, this list covers gross vocabulary to do with the human body. You may also be interested in our blog post on idioms about the human body.

5.    Scary Words

The English language is full of weird and wonderful words – why use the same one over and over again? Inspired by our new 10 Words blog feature, this is a list of different scary words. From bloodcurdling, to spooky, to  petrifying – whatever you experience this Halloween, you’ll certainly have the right word to describe it!

Once you’ve tested your vocabulary with the Spooky Spelling game, make sure you give Which Witch a try. In this game you have to spell words correctly to stop an evil witch from getting more powerful. Learn more about the link between spelling and magic spells here
