Information for tutors in adult learning units

Spellzone can be used in any learning unit and students can also study independently at home, or the go.

Spellzone is ideal for use for adult education purposes as it was originally written especially for older students. Although the teaching covers spelling rules from a basic level, it differs greatly from software developed for children. The course provides comprehensive teaching in English spelling rules, followed by extensive word lists and activities in the form of interactive tests and games.

Spellzone is used successfully with these groups of adult learners:

  • Dyslexic people, who may not have had their problems diagnosed and treated earlier
  • Those who need help in the Key Skills of Literacy
  • Those whose first language is not English

"Spellzone is particularly useful for employers and teaching / lectures in FE / HE. We are lacking resources to support adults with a SpLD so was pleased to find such a useful approach."

Rachel Ingham, Dyslexia (SpLD) Consultant, Understanding and Supporting Learning

Spellzone covers these areas of the UK Adult Literacy Core Curriculum:

  • Entry Level (Entry 2 & 3)
  • Level 1
  • Level 2

Tutors do not need to be experienced in teaching English spelling as the Spellzone Spelling Ability Test provides a baseline 'Spellzone Score' and creates a personal 'Course Pathway' for each student. All teaching is presented clearly and in a logical order, with clear explanations at each stage enabling students  to study either with the help of a tutor or independently in the learning unit, in their own homes and on mobile devices.

Spellzone is particularly suitable for dyslexic students. It can also be used by those whose first language is not English. The main course covers both British and American spellings, a translation feature enables them to view all word lists in any one of 92 languages, and the Spellzone dictionary allows learners to check the meaning of most unfamiliar words.

Word lists

Students and tutors can create custom word lists for their subject, project or exam revision preparation (from very low level to degree level specialist technical vocabulary).  There are also 1000s of pre-loaded word lists available:

"Thank goodness for Spellzone during this remote learning phase. The site is easy for students to navigate independently and they're really enjoying the activities and spelling games. You get an awful lot for your money with Spellzone. Really reassuring is the very prompt response with helpdesk queries. I've very rarely needed the helpdesk, but when I have, the issue has been addressed and sorted within a very short time."

Sarah Taggart, Oasis Academy Lord's Hill
